A 35-year-old government schoolteacher was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping his 15-year-old student at a rented house in Kendrapada district, where he had called her for private tuition on Sunday evening, police said. The accused English teacher also threatened the Class IX student with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident.
Legal Proceedings
The accused teacher was produced before a court in Kendrapada, which rejected his bail plea and remanded him to judicial custody. The minor was also produced before the court for recording her statement, as mandated under law in cases of sexual offences.
How the Case Came to Light
The matter came to light when the girl complained of abdominal pain to her mother on Wednesday. Following this, her father lodged a complaint at the local police station the same day, also alleging that the accused recorded a compromising video of the minor with the intention of blackmail, though police said no such video has been seized so far.
Charges Filed
“Based on the complaint, we registered a case and arrested the accused under sections 65(1) and 64 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012,” investigation officer Jagannath Panigrahi said, adding that both the minor and accused were medically examined at the district headquarters hospital on Thursday.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with parents demanding stricter background checks for teachers. Police are continuing their investigation, and further details are awaited.
