Odisha Government Announces Formation of Dedicated Anti-Terror Squad
In a significant move to bolster internal security, the Odisha government is actively preparing to establish a dedicated Anti-Terror Squad (ATS). This specialized unit aims to ensure rapid and effective responses to terror-related threats across the state, marking a strategic shift in law enforcement priorities.
Specialized Investigation Wing with Statewide Jurisdiction
According to authoritative sources within the Odisha police department, the ATS will operate as a specialized investigation wing or police station endowed with statewide jurisdiction. This new entity is poised to replace the state crime branch's Special Task Force (STF), which has been handling terror-related investigations until now.
A senior police officer elaborated on the rationale behind this initiative, stating, "With Odisha having successfully overcome left-wing extremism as per the Centre's March 31 target, our focus is now decisively shifting towards urban terrorism and warfare scenarios."
Reorientation of Special Operations Group
The officer further revealed that the structure and operational modalities of the ATS are currently being finalized. As part of this restructuring, the Special Operations Group (SOG), which was previously tasked with anti-Maoist operations, will be reoriented to tackle terrorism more comprehensively.
While the SOG already maintains a small tactical unit dedicated to urban terrorism, the ATS will evolve into a full-fledged organization with significantly enhanced manpower and resources. This expansion is designed to address the growing complexities of modern terror threats.
Advanced Training Facilities at Chandaka Campus
The SOG campus located at Chandaka, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, houses advanced training facilities that will support the ATS's mission. On December 24 last year, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated a state-of-the-art counter-terrorism training facility and briefing centre at this location.
This cutting-edge facility is capable of training up to 400 personnel simultaneously, representing a substantial upgrade in Odisha's preparedness against potential terror threats. The integration of such advanced infrastructure is expected to significantly boost the state's operational readiness and response capabilities.
Proactive Security Measures Despite Limited Direct Attacks
Although Odisha has not experienced direct terrorist attacks in recent history, police authorities remain vigilant and cautious. This precaution stems from past connections between some state residents and extremist organizations, highlighting the need for proactive security measures.
The establishment of the ATS reflects a forward-looking approach to security management, ensuring that Odisha remains well-prepared to counter emerging threats in an increasingly complex security landscape.
