Odisha Vigilance Uncovers Suspected Corruption in Extensive Raids on Engineer's Properties
In a significant anti-corruption operation, vigilance officials in Odisha executed extensive searches on Wednesday at multiple properties associated with an additional chief engineer from the irrigation department. The raids were initiated following serious allegations that the government official had amassed disproportionate assets far beyond his known sources of income.
Systematic Evidence of Bribery Uncovered During Raids
During the coordinated searches, which targeted various locations including the 58-year-old engineer's residence in Bhubaneswar, officials made a startling discovery. They recovered substantial amounts of cash meticulously stashed in envelopes. These envelopes were notably labeled with references to specific projects and agreements, strongly indicating a systematic and organized practice of suspected bribe collection over time.
Palatial Properties and Valuable Assets Revealed
A senior vigilance officer provided detailed insights into the assets uncovered. "We detected his palatial three-storey building constructed on a 3,000 square foot plot at the Baramunda Housing Board colony in Bhubaneswar," the officer stated. "Additionally, he owns a sprawling farmhouse featuring a double-storey building located at Bhapur in the Dhenkanal district. Our investigation has also unearthed five valuable plots—one in Bhubaneswar and four in Dhenkanal. The measurement and valuation of these substantial assets are currently underway."
Financial Holdings and Suspicious Expenditures Under Scrutiny
The anti-corruption authorities seized approximately Rs 6 lakh in physical cash during the operation. Furthermore, they identified bank deposits totaling Rs 1.7 crore held in the names of the government official and his immediate family members. In a revealing find, flight tickets worth Rs 13.47 lakh were also recovered, reflecting domestic travel expenses incurred between 2021 and 2025, which are now under intense scrutiny for potential misuse of funds.
Career Trajectory and Salary Background of the Accused Official
The official in question began his government service on June 2, 1994, as a stipendiary engineer under the Odisha Housing Board, earning a modest monthly salary of Rs 2,000. Over the years, he climbed the bureaucratic ladder, achieving promotions to superintending engineer and, most recently, to the position of additional chief engineer in July 2021. This career progression contrasts sharply with the extensive assets now linked to him, raising critical questions about the sources of his wealth.
The vigilance department's investigation remains active, with officials meticulously documenting all evidence to build a robust case. This incident highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption within public service departments in Odisha, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability among government officials.
