Congress Leader Flags Law & Order After Tripura Student's Death in Dehradun
Outrage Over Tripura Student's Killing in Dehradun

The death of a young MBA student from Tripura in Uttarakhand has ignited a political firestorm and nationwide concern over safety and communal rhetoric. Congress leader Shama Mohamed has sharply criticized the central government, alleging a breakdown of law and order and questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on rising threats against minorities.

Political Outcry and Allegations of Hate Speech

Referring to a widely circulated online video, Shama Mohamed expressed grave alarm. She stated that the video showed a group of Hindu men threatening to kill all Muslims in the country. "Why is our Prime Minister silent?" she asked during an interview with ANI. Mohamed urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of the deteriorating situation, emphasizing that "such an incident can happen with anyone." Her comments directly link the broader climate of hate speech to the tragic killing of Angel Chakma.

The Tragic Incident and Demand for Justice

The case revolves around Angel (Anjel) Chakma, a resident of Nandanagar in Tripura, who was pursuing an MBA. On December 9, he was brutally attacked by a group of assailants armed with knives and blunt objects in Dehradun. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital.

In response, the community in Agartala organized a large candlelight march to seek justice. Thousands participated, demanding the harshest punishment for the perpetrators. Samir Chakma, chairman of the Chakma Committee, was unequivocal in the demand: "We will demand that punishment--meaning the death penalty--be given to those people." The protesters called for swift and stringent action from the authorities.

Police Action and Ongoing Manhunt

Uttarakhand police have reported progress in the investigation. Five accused have been arrested, with two minors sent to a juvenile reform home. A sixth accused, identified as a Nepalese national, remains at large. A dedicated police team has been formed, and a reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced for information leading to his capture. Authorities believe he may be hiding in nearby bordering areas.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Singh confirmed that after a preliminary probe, more serious charges were added to the case. Sections related to attempted murder (109) were incorporated based on witness statements. The Uttarakhand government has assured that all possible measures are being taken to ensure the perpetrators face the maximum punishment and to safeguard students from the northeast across the country.

The incident has transcended local crime, becoming a flashpoint for discussions on national security, minority safety, and the political responsibility to condemn inflammatory rhetoric. The demand for justice from Tripura and the demand for accountability from New Delhi now run parallel, putting the spotlight on India's law and order machinery.
