A passenger was arrested at Jayprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna after seven live cartridges were recovered from his hand baggage during a security check, officials said on Saturday.
According to a statement issued by Patna Police, the ammunition was detected in the bag of Santosh Tiwari, a resident of Pune, Maharashtra, on Friday during screening at an X-ray baggage scanner by personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The recovered ammunition comprised two .380 MK2 live rounds and five 9 mm live rounds.
During questioning, Tiwari told security personnel that he was unaware of the presence of the cartridges in his bag and had no knowledge of how they came to be there, officials said. Following the recovery, CISF Inspector Arun Nehru handed over the passenger, along with the seized ammunition, to the airport police station for legal action.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Arms Act, and the passenger has been arrested, officials said. Further investigations are underway, police added, as reported by PTI.
The incident comes a month after security personnel at the airport detained another passenger when three live cartridges were found in his handbag. The passenger, identified as Syed Mohsin Ali, a resident of Phulwarisharif, was scheduled to fly from Patna to Delhi on an Air India flight. Following the recovery of cartridges during scanning of his handbag by CISF personnel, he was taken into custody and handed over to the airport police station for interrogation.
Security Concerns at Patna Airport
These incidents highlight ongoing security challenges at the airport. The CISF has intensified screening procedures to prevent such occurrences. Passengers are advised to check their baggage thoroughly before travel to avoid legal consequences.
