Patiala Police Crack Down on Robbery Gang with Major Arrests and Recovery
The Patiala police have achieved a significant breakthrough in a violent robbery case, announcing the arrest of three key members of a criminal gang on Friday. This decisive action followed a brutal housebreaking incident that occurred in the Model Town area of the city.
Details of the Violent Incident and Police Response
Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma provided a detailed account of the crime. The incident took place on the intervening night of April 3 and 4, when unidentified assailants forcibly entered the residence of Darshan Kumar near PUDA plots in Model Town. The criminals attacked an elderly couple living there, leaving them with serious injuries before fleeing with a substantial amount of cash and jewellery.
A formal case was registered on April 4 at the Civil Lines police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. Police teams, led by SP Palwinder Singh Cheema, launched an intensive investigation to track down the perpetrators.
Arrests and Substantial Recovery of Stolen Property
The police successfully traced and arrested the accused on April 17 from the Civil Lines area of Patiala. The arrested individuals include 35-year-old Sourav Chhabra, a property dealer from Dhuri, along with his associates Guddu Kumar (20) and Vishal Kumar (20), both labourers from Ludhiana.
During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered a significant haul of stolen property. This recovery included Rs 5 lakh in cash, approximately 80 grams of gold, 2 kilograms of silver jewellery, and a Skoda car that was used by the gang to commit the crime.
Mastermind and Execution of the Planned Robbery
SSP Sharma revealed that Sourav Chhabra was the mastermind behind the entire operation. Being familiar with the locality, Chhabra had prior knowledge that the victims were elderly and lived alone, making them vulnerable targets. He conducted thorough reconnaissance and conspired with his accomplices from Ludhiana to execute the robbery with precision.
On the night of the incident, the trio used Chhabra's vehicle to reach the house and carried out the planned robbery. When the elderly couple woke up during the crime, they were assaulted by the accused, who then escaped with the valuables.
Ongoing Investigation and Broader Criminal Links
Preliminary interrogation of the accused has indicated their possible involvement in earlier thefts in the Dhuri area. These previous crimes are yet to be fully investigated, suggesting the gang may have a broader criminal footprint.
Police officials have confirmed that in the specific case related to the Model Town housebreaking, a 100% recovery of stolen property has been made from the accused. However, the investigation is continuing, with police seeking custodial remand of the arrested individuals to uncover additional links and crimes connected to the gang.
