Patna Protest: NEET Student's Mother Leads March to CBI Office Demanding Justice
In a powerful display of public outcry, hundreds of protesters, including the grieving mother of a NEET student who died under suspicious circumstances in January, marched towards the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Patna on Friday. The demonstrators, carrying placards and raising slogans, demanded swift justice and accountability in the case that has raised serious questions about investigation procedures.
Police Intervention and Scuffles at Income Tax Roundabout
As the protest march gained momentum, police authorities intervened at the Income Tax roundabout, deploying significant force to maintain public order. The protesters, determined to reach the CBI office, attempted to push past the police barricades, resulting in brief but tense scuffles between demonstrators and law enforcement personnel. The scene highlighted the escalating tensions surrounding this high-profile case.
Composition of the Protest March
The protest saw substantial participation from various segments of society. Hundreds of people, many traveling from Jehanabad district by buses, joined the demonstration. A notable aspect was the significant number of women who participated actively in the march, underscoring the broad-based concern about the case. The victim's mother stood at the forefront, her presence symbolizing the personal tragedy behind the public protest.
Allegations of Negligence in CBI Probe
The protesters leveled serious allegations of negligence in the CBI investigation. The victim's mother expressed her complete loss of faith in the investigative process, stating emphatically, "I have no faith in the CBI investigation. I demand the death penalty for the guilty. The agency should act at the earliest." Her words echoed the frustration of many who believe justice has been delayed in this sensitive case.
Political Support and Criticism
Purnia MP Pappu Yadav joined the protest and delivered scathing criticism of both the investigation and what he termed public silence. "We are living in a cowardly society," he declared. "I have raised the matter four times in the Lok Sabha. Why does no political leader speak about this case?" His participation added political weight to the protest and highlighted the case's significance beyond local concerns.
Background of the Tragic Case
The student was found unconscious at a private hostel on January 6 and succumbed to her condition during treatment at a private hospital on January 11. The case took a serious turn when the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report allegedly found sperm on the victim's undergarment. Following mounting questions about the initial Patna police probe, the investigation was transferred to the CBI, a move that has failed to satisfy the victim's family and supporters.
Demands for Transparent Investigation
The protesters emphasized their demand for a transparent, thorough, and time-bound investigation. They called for the CBI to demonstrate greater urgency and effectiveness in handling the case. The march served as both a memorial for the deceased student and a forceful reminder to authorities that public scrutiny remains intense regarding this matter of alleged injustice.
