Businessman Pawan Ruia Arrested in Multi-Crore Interstate Fraud Case
Prominent businessman Pawan Ruia has been taken into custody by the cybercrime wing of the Bengal Police in connection with a significant interstate fraud case involving several hundred crores of rupees. On Wednesday, Ruia was produced before a Bidhannagar court, which subsequently remanded him to seven days of police custody for further investigation.
Court Proceedings and Allegations
During the court hearing, special public prosecutor Rajdeep Bandyopadhyay presented the prosecution's case, alleging that Ruia was a key participant in a larger, organized conspiracy. Bandyopadhyay submitted detailed evidence indicating the involvement of multiple shell companies and bank accounts allegedly linked to the accused.
"We need to probe the larger organized conspiracy. We have evidence that people with no experience or qualification were made directors in these shell companies where crores exchanged hands," stated Bandyopadhyay during the proceedings.
Details of the Fraud Investigation
The investigation was initiated following a formal complaint filed by Swapan Kumar Mondal, a senior citizen residing within the jurisdiction of the Eco Park Police Station. Mondal alleged that he was defrauded of approximately Rs 93 lakh after being persuaded to install a mobile application under false pretenses of high investment returns.
Police authorities revealed that subsequent forensic examination uncovered a sophisticated network through which funds were systematically siphoned. The money trail led investigators to numerous shell companies and corporate current accounts, allegedly connected to Ruia and his associates.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Probe
This case highlights growing concerns about financial fraud schemes targeting vulnerable individuals through digital platforms. The Bengal Police's cybercrime unit is now focusing on unraveling the complete network of this alleged conspiracy, which authorities believe extends beyond state borders and involves complex financial maneuvers.
The seven-day police custody will enable investigators to conduct thorough interrogations and gather additional evidence regarding the shell companies' operations, fund transfers, and potential accomplices in what appears to be a meticulously planned financial fraud operation.
