Pilibhit Man Faces Legal Action for Alleged Obscene Social Media Posts Against Estranged Wife
In a disturbing case from Pilibhit, a 34-year-old man has been formally charged for allegedly posting obscene photographs of his estranged wife on various social media platforms, accompanied by derogatory remarks. The accused is also reported to have shared pictures of his mother-in-law in the same posts, escalating the severity of the allegations.
Background of the Marital Dispute
The woman involved in this case was married in 2019 in Aonla town, located within Bareilly district. However, the marriage quickly soured due to ongoing dowry-related disputes, leading her to return to her parental home. She has accused her husband of defaming her publicly by uploading obscene photographs and making objectionable comments online, which she claims have severely damaged her reputation and that of her family in society.
Legal Proceedings and Escalation
On May 7, 2024, the woman submitted a written complaint to the authorities, resulting in the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) under provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. According to her account, this legal action did not deter her husband; instead, it allegedly emboldened him to continue his harassment. She believes he held a grudge over the dowry-related case she had previously filed against him.
After a brief pause, the accused reportedly resumed posting her private photographs on multiple social media platforms, further exacerbating the emotional and social harm. In response to these actions, the police have taken decisive steps.
Police Intervention and Charges
Subhash Mawi, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Neuria police station, confirmed that following directions from the Superintendent of Police, the accused has been booked under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. This section specifically addresses the transmission of obscene material in electronic form, highlighting the legal framework being used to combat such digital harassment.
The case underscores the growing challenges of online defamation and the misuse of social media in personal disputes, particularly in contexts involving dowry and marital conflicts. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of swift legal action to protect victims and uphold justice in such sensitive matters.
