Police Inspector Shoots Rowdy in Leg During Arrest in Cuddalore
A police inspector shot a rowdy in the leg on Friday near Neyveli in Cuddalore district. The incident occurred when the rowdy tried to escape after attacking two police constables with a sickle.
Violent Confrontation Unfolds
The rowdy, identified as P Subashkar, 25, from Indira Nagar in Neyveli, inflicted bleeding injuries on the forearms of constables K Venkatachalam, 38, and S Vaithianathan, 37. Police had been hunting for Subashkar in connection with a previous attack on vegetable vendor K Ramesh, 48.
Ramesh was brutally assaulted with a sickle at his shop on January 15. He sustained severe injuries to his head, face, and neck, falling unconscious. Authorities rushed him to Kurinjipadi government hospital for first aid before referring him to Jipmer in Puducherry for advanced treatment.
Police Investigation and Motive
Cuddalore SP S Jeyakumar stated that Kurunkipadi police registered a case and analysed CCTV footage from the area. They identified Subashkar as the accused and launched a manhunt. Initial inquiries revealed that previous enmity motivated the crime.
A wordy duel had erupted between Ramesh and Subashkar in front of the shop during Diwali last year. The rowdy was waiting to settle scores with the vegetable vendor, leading to the brutal attack on Thursday.
Arrest Attempt Turns Violent
On Friday, a police team led by Kurunjipadi inspector R Vijayakumar, 55, received a tip-off about Subashkar hiding in a cashew grove near Neyveli. The team reached the spot promptly.
Upon spotting the policemen, Subashkar attacked constables Venkatachalam and Vaithianathan with the sickle. He caused bleeding injuries to Venkatachalam's right upper limb and Vaithianathan's left upper limb.
Inspector Vijayakumar instructed Subashkar to drop the weapon and surrender. However, the rowdy tried to attack the inspector instead. In self-defence, Vijayakumar shot Subashkar in his right leg.
Aftermath and Hospitalization
The police team arrested the injured rowdy immediately. All injured parties, including the two constables and Subashkar, were admitted to NLC Hospital.
Doctors gave Subashkar first aid at NLC Hospital before referring him to Cuddalore government general hospital for advanced treatment. The constables also received medical attention for their injuries.
This incident highlights the dangers police face during arrest operations in the region. Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding both attacks.
