Police Rescue 10 Lost Pilgrims in Sonbhadra Jungle After 8-Hour Search

Intensive 8-Hour Search Operation Leads to Successful Rescue of Lost Pilgrims

In a dramatic late-night operation, police in Sonbhadra district successfully rescued 10 Muslim pilgrims who had lost their way in the dense jungle surrounding Vijaygarh fort. The exhaustive search lasted nearly eight hours and involved multiple police teams working through challenging terrain and darkness.

Emergency Alert Triggers Immediate Police Response

According to Sonbhadra Superintendent of Police Abhishek Verma, authorities received an urgent alert at 8:20 PM on Monday evening. The notification indicated that a group of pilgrims from Varanasi and Mirzapur had become disoriented while visiting a shrine located within the Vijaygarh fort complex.

The pilgrims had entered through the fort's rear gate and lost their bearings while navigating the jungle route, creating a potentially dangerous situation as darkness fell over the remote area.

Coordinated Search Operation Under Challenging Conditions

Police from Rampur Barkoniya police station immediately joined forces with the PRV 8507 team to launch a comprehensive search operation. The situation was complicated by the fact that the caller's mobile phone had been switched off, eliminating the possibility of electronic tracking.

Search teams equipped themselves with torches, whistles, and a loud hailer system to comb through the dense forest vegetation. The challenging terrain and limited visibility required methodical, systematic searching as officers called out and listened for responses from the lost individuals.

Successful Location and Identification of All Pilgrims

After nearly eight hours of intensive searching, police successfully located all ten missing pilgrims. The rescued individuals included:

  • Nehal Akhtar (39)
  • Faiz (14)
  • Mehkan Nisha (55)
  • Rabia Begum (30)
  • Rukhsar (7) from Adalhat in Mirzapur
  • Hanif (45)
  • Shahid (15)
  • Sameer (16)
  • Sania (16)
  • Naseema Khatoon (35) from Varanasi

The group represented a cross-section of ages, from young children to older adults, highlighting the potential severity of the situation had the rescue been delayed.

Police Issue Safety Advisory for Jungle Visitors

Following the successful operation, SP Abhishek Verma emphasized the importance of proper preparation when visiting remote or unfamiliar locations. He specifically appealed to visitors to seek local guidance and maintain group cohesion while exploring jungle areas or unfamiliar terrain.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by India's diverse landscapes and the importance of proper planning for religious pilgrimages and visits to remote heritage sites. Police noted that the fort's rear entrance, while accessible, presents particular navigation challenges for those unfamiliar with the area.

This successful rescue operation demonstrates the preparedness and dedication of local law enforcement in responding to emergency situations in challenging environments. The coordinated effort between different police units ensured a positive outcome despite the difficult conditions and time constraints.
