Pratapgarh District Jail in UP Achieves Triple ISO Certification Milestone
In a significant development for prison administration in India, the Pratapgarh district jail, situated in a crime-prone region of eastern Uttar Pradesh, has secured three prestigious ISO certifications. This recognition comes after the institution introduced a series of innovative reformatory changes and quality-focused initiatives over the past two years.
Details of the ISO Certifications Awarded
The certifications were granted in three distinct categories, highlighting the jail's comprehensive approach to improvement. These include ISO 45001:2018 for occupational health and safety management, ISO 9001:2015 for quality management systems, and ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management systems.
Senior jail superintendent Rishabh Dwivedi provided insights into this achievement, noting that the Quality Research Organisation from Delhi has been actively analyzing and supervising the quality works and projects within the jail for the past two years.
Environmental and Cleanliness Initiatives
Dwivedi emphasized the environmental efforts undertaken, stating that apart from maintaining 263 existing trees, jail authorities have planted over 300 saplings. A continuous cleanliness campaign operates 24/7 across the jail campus, including all barracks.
Furthermore, the jail has coordinated with local municipal authorities for proper waste disposal. Pratapgarh district jail is the first in the state to launch a biomedical disposal system, setting a new standard for waste management in correctional facilities.
Quality Management and Human Rights Focus
A robust quality management system and strict discipline are being adhered to within the prison. Special care is taken to protect the human rights of all inmates, ensuring their dignity and well-being are prioritized.
With assistance from the Shiv Nadar Foundation, the jail has implemented three-month educational programs and training sessions to improve literacy among inmates. Additionally, a health ATM has been installed on the jail hospital premises to enhance medical facilities and accessibility.
Educational and Technological Advancements
Beyond basic education, computer and other professional training programs are being provided to inmates. Various remedial programs aim at the moral and mental uplift of prisoners, contributing to their rehabilitation.
The jail has also embraced technology with the installation of 87 CCTVs for round-the-clock surveillance. All prison documents have been digitized, and inmate details are managed through e-prison software, improving efficiency and transparency.
Food Quality and Additional Reforms
In the realm of food services, the jail has installed automatic machines for flour kneading and baking chapatis. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has granted the jail its Eat Right Campus 4-Star Full Compliance certificate for maintaining high food quality standards.
Moreover, the jail has received a license for manufacturing amlakriti products from amla, showcasing entrepreneurial initiatives within the facility. Inmates of all religions are allowed to hold special prayers, promoting religious harmony and personal well-being.
Regular cleanliness and beautification of the area are conducted, ensuring a conducive environment for both staff and inmates. These multifaceted reforms demonstrate a holistic approach to prison management, aiming not only for compliance but for genuine improvement in living conditions and rehabilitation opportunities.
