A 25-year-old prisoner is battling for his life after attempting suicide inside the Coimbatore Central Prison on Friday. Prison officials have identified the inmate as R Jeevanantham, 25, a resident of Sulur. He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody a few years ago in connection with an attempt-to-murder case. Jeevanantham was later released on bail but was arrested again in November 2025 after a court issued an arrest warrant.
Incident Details
According to prison officials, Jeevanantham attempted suicide in room 10 of block 22 of the Coimbatore Central Prison. He used his lungi to hang himself from an iron rod. Fellow inmates noticed the incident and immediately raised an alarm, alerting prison guards. Jail personnel promptly rescued Jeevanantham and shifted him to the prison hospital for emergency first aid.
Medical Response
On the recommendation of the prison medical officer, Jeevanantham was later shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where he remains admitted in critical condition. The hospital staff are providing necessary medical care.
Police Investigation
Based on a complaint lodged by jailor K Thirumalai, the Race Course police have registered a case to ascertain the reason behind the suicide attempt. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are looking into possible factors that may have led to the incident.
