Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission (EC), questioning its vigilance and accusing it of dereliction of duty. 'Is EC sleeping?' he asked, while addressing concerns over the accuracy of electoral rolls in the state.
Kharge's Remarks on BLOs and EC
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Kharge pointed out that while Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are state government staff, they operate under the direct supervision of the Election Commission. 'BLOs may be state government staff, but they report to the Election Commission,' he said, emphasizing that the EC cannot evade responsibility for any lapses.
Kharge's comments come amid allegations of irregularities in the voter list, including duplicate entries and missing names. He demanded a thorough review and corrective measures before the upcoming elections.
Allegations of Electoral Roll Irregularities
The minister cited instances where voters found their names missing or incorrect, raising doubts about the integrity of the electoral process. 'The EC must ensure that every eligible voter is enrolled and that the rolls are error-free,' Kharge asserted, calling for an immediate audit.
He also accused the EC of failing to enforce model code violations and acting as a 'silent spectator' to political malpractices. 'The EC's inaction is a threat to democracy,' he warned.
Political Reactions and Demands
Kharge's outburst has sparked a political row, with the ruling party demanding an explanation from the EC. Opposition leaders have also weighed in, supporting the call for electoral reforms. Congress workers staged protests outside the EC office in Bengaluru, submitting a memorandum demanding a comprehensive review of voter lists.
The EC has not yet responded to Kharge's allegations. However, sources indicate that the commission is likely to issue a clarification and may order a random audit of BLO performance in select constituencies.
