Property Dispute Leads to Double Murder in Gurdaspur

A shocking incident of fratricide unfolded in Punjab's Gurdaspur district on Tuesday night, where a man allegedly shot dead his younger brother and sister-in-law over a longstanding property dispute, police said on Wednesday.

The Incident

The accused, identified as Amarjit Singh, also known as Amba, was arrested the following day. According to police, Amarjit ambushed his brother Ajaib Singh, 52, on a secluded road near a poultry farm in Nainkot village, shooting him in the head. After committing the murder, the accused drove his scooter to Ajaib's residence and gunned down his sister-in-law, Kamal Kaur, 50.

Background of the Dispute

The couple is survived by two sons—one residing in Australia and the other in Bihar. Police sources revealed that the brothers were locked in a bitter dispute over nine kanals of ancestral land. Although the family had spent years in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, they returned to the village last year. Despite multiple panchayat meetings to settle the division, agreements repeatedly collapsed, leading to escalating tensions.
