Security measures have been significantly intensified at Pune Airport in response to a recent hoax bomb threat and in preparation for the upcoming Republic Day celebrations. The heightened alert follows a handwritten note discovered in an airport lavatory on Thursday evening, which falsely claimed a bomb was aboard an IndiGo flight from Delhi, triggering a full-scale security response.
Enhanced Security Protocols Activated
Airport director Santosh Dhoke confirmed that a special security coordination meeting was held on Friday, resulting in the implementation of several stringent measures. Secondary ladder point security checks (SLPC) have been made mandatory for all flyers, requiring additional frisking and possible bag checks at the aerobridge before boarding. This protocol will remain active until January 30, potentially increasing overall security processing times.
Comprehensive Security Measures
In addition to SLPC, authorities have activated special quick reaction teams (QRT) to monitor both airside and cityside areas around the airport. Intensive checking of passengers and vehicles is being conducted at approach nakas leading to the terminal building. Surveillance has been further enhanced across airport premises, including the cargo terminal, with intensified monitoring and access control for ground handling staff and other personnel.
Passenger Advisory and Challenges
Passengers have been advised to report at least three hours prior to their flights to accommodate the enhanced security procedures. This recommendation comes amid additional challenges, including road closures related to the Pune Grand Tour event on Friday, which caused significant traffic disruptions and cab availability issues.
Traveler Experiences
Several flyers shared their difficulties with transportation and planning. Paresh Jain, traveling to Chennai, arrived at the airport by noon for a 5:50 PM flight to avoid potential traffic jams. Atanu Prakash, arriving from Bengaluru, found himself stranded as cab drivers refused trips due to road blocks and diversions. Prashant Yadav, landing from Delhi, waited at the AeroMall for two hours before finding transportation to Rasta Peth.
Dhoke noted that the AeroMall provides sufficient waiting space for arriving passengers facing transportation challenges. Pune Airport remains classified as a hyper-sensitive security facility, necessitating these comprehensive measures to ensure passenger safety during this period of elevated alert.
