In a shocking incident in Pune, a PMPML bus conductor, Surekha Baliram Bhalerao, sustained serious leg injuries after being assaulted by a passenger under the influence of alcohol. The attack occurred around 7:30 PM on Wednesday near Pune railway station, when Bhalerao instructed the passenger to deboard the bus due to his disruptive behavior.
Details of the Assault Incident
The incident took place on a PMC-Vimannagar bus route. According to sub-inspector Dhiraj Gupta of the Bund Garden police, the passenger had boarded the bus and purchased a ticket but began causing significant discomfort to other passengers by speaking loudly and creating excessive noise. Annoyed passengers complained to Bhalerao about the drunk individual's conduct, prompting her to take action.
Bhalerao stopped the bus near Pune railway station and ordered the passenger to deboard. This decision enraged the passenger, who responded by pulling out a knife from his trousers and assaulting Bhalerao on her leg. After the attack, the passenger fled the scene, leaving Bhalerao injured.
Police Investigation and Medical Response
Following the assault, Bhalerao was promptly taken to Sassoon General Hospital, where she received medical treatment, including stitches for her wounds. She lodged a formal complaint with the Bund Garden police on Thursday afternoon, initiating an investigation into the matter.
Sub-inspector Gupta stated that the police are actively studying CCTV footage from the spot and adjacent areas to trace the movement of the assailant. We have obtained some leads in the case, he confirmed, emphasizing efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect.
Broader Implications and Community Concerns
This violent attack highlights the risks faced by public transport workers in Pune and raises concerns about passenger safety on buses. The PMPML, as a key service provider, may need to review security measures to protect its staff from such incidents in the future.
