Pune Engineer Fatally Struck by Water Tanker in Wanowrie
A tragic road accident claimed the life of a young engineer in Pune on Tuesday morning, marking the second such fatality involving a water tanker in the area within just three days. The incident has sparked widespread alarm among residents, who are calling for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to curb reckless driving by tanker operators.
Details of the Fatal Collision
Gracia Daniel Isa, a 22-year-old engineer, was riding her scooter near Ganga Satellite society in Wanowrie around 8:15 am when a water tanker collided with her vehicle. According to Senior Inspector Bhausaheb Patil of the Wanowrie police, both vehicles were taking a left turn when the front left section of the tanker struck the scooter. Passersby immediately raised an alarm, and police rushed Gracia to Sassoon General Hospital. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival due to severe head injuries.
Gracia had recently completed her BE in Artificial Intelligence and computer science and was employed at a company in Nanded City on Sinhagad Road. Her father, an engineer based in Chennai, and her mother, Geeta (49), are devastated by the loss. A family friend expressed deep sorrow, stating, "We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic demise of Gracia. Her untimely passing is a great loss."
Arrests and Previous Incident
Police have arrested the tanker driver, Santoshkumar Maurya (45), a native of Navada in Bihar who resides in Wanowrie, based on a complaint filed by Gracia's mother. This arrest follows another fatal accident that occurred just days earlier. On Sunday morning, 19-year-old Aariz Shaikh, an aspiring footballer from Pargenagar, was killed when a water tanker hit his motorcycle from behind on NIBM-Raheja Vista Road. Medical reports confirmed that the driver, Ravindra Danane (34) of Shivnerinagar in Kondhwa, was driving under the influence of alcohol, leading to his arrest.
In the Sunday incident, authorities also arrested the tanker owner for negligence. An officer from the Kalepadal police station explained, "We have arrested the tanker owner in this case. The tanker owner handed over the tanker to the driver despite knowing that the driver was drunk. This neglected the safety of other road users."
Community Outcry and Safety Concerns
Residents of the area are expressing grave concerns over the recurring accidents involving water tankers. Maithili Manakawad, a resident of NIBM Road, highlighted the dangers, saying, "Not only is this incident shocking, but also deeply alarming. It is the second fatality caused by a tanker driver's rash and reckless driving, which simply cannot be ignored. Water tankers have become a nuisance on our roads. Many are driven irresponsibly, posing a constant threat to commuters."
She further pointed out that many tankers leak continuously, leaving trails of water that corrode road surfaces, expose loose rubble, and create dangerously slippery conditions, especially for two-wheeler riders. "This is not just an inconvenience; it is a grave safety hazard that demands urgent attention and strict enforcement," she added.
Calls for Stricter Regulations
Local residents have urged authorities to implement more rigorous safety measures. They note that during summer, the demand for water tankers increases significantly, leading drivers to complete multiple trips quickly, often at high speeds and without proper training. Many tankers operate without assistants to guide drivers, particularly when reversing or navigating narrow residential roads. Another resident emphasized, "Authorities should enforce stricter safety regulations to prevent potential accidents."
The back-to-back tragedies have underscored the urgent need for improved road safety protocols and accountability among tanker owners and drivers to prevent further loss of life in Pune.
