Pune Engineer Killed in Water Tanker Crash, Second Fatality in Three Days
A tragic road accident in Pune has claimed the life of a young engineer, marking the second such incident involving a water tanker in the area within just three days. The victim, identified as Gracia Daniel Isa, a 22-year-old engineer, was fatally injured when a water tanker collided with her scooter near Ganga Satellite society in Wanowrie on Tuesday morning around 8:15 am.
Details of the Incident and Arrest
According to police reports, the driver of the water tanker, Santoshkumar Maurya (45), has been arrested based on a complaint filed by Gracia's mother, Geeta (49). Maurya, a native of Navada in Bihar, is also a resident of Wanowrie. Senior inspector Bhausaheb Patil of the Wanowrie police provided further details, stating that Gracia had recently completed her BE in artificial intelligence and computer science and was employed at a company in Nanded City on Sinhagad Road. Her father is an engineer based in Chennai.
On the morning of the accident, Gracia had left home slightly earlier than usual to complete some office work. Just minutes into her ride, the collision occurred as both vehicles were taking a left turn near Ganga Satellite. The front left section of the tanker struck the scooter, causing severe head injuries to Gracia. Passersby immediately raised an alarm, prompting police to shift her to Sassoon General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Second Fatal Crash in the Area
This incident follows another fatal crash on Sunday morning, where 19-year-old Aariz Shaikh, an aspiring footballer and resident of Pargenagar, was killed after a water tanker hit his motorcycle from the rear on NIBM-Raheja Vista Road. Police investigations revealed that the driver in that case, Ravindra Danane (34) of Shivnerinagar in Kondhwa, was driving under the influence of alcohol and has been arrested. Additionally, the tanker owner was arrested for negligence, as they handed over the vehicle to the driver despite knowing his intoxicated state, thereby endangering other road users.
Community Outcry and Safety Concerns
The consecutive accidents have sparked alarm among local residents, who are calling for strict action against reckless water tanker driving. Maithili Manakawad, a resident of NIBM Road, expressed deep concern, noting that this is the second fatality caused by rash driving by tanker drivers, which cannot be ignored. She highlighted that water tankers have become a nuisance on roads, often driven irresponsibly and posing constant threats to commuters.
Residents also pointed out additional hazards, such as many tankers leaking continuously, which leaves trails of water that corrode road surfaces, expose loose rubble, and create dangerously slippery conditions, especially for two-wheeler riders. This is not merely an inconvenience but a grave safety hazard requiring urgent attention and stricter enforcement.
Calls for Regulatory Measures
Locals emphasized that during summer, the demand for water tankers increases significantly, leading many drivers to complete multiple trips quickly by driving rashly at high speeds. In many instances, tankers operate without assistants to guide drivers, particularly when reversing or navigating narrow residential roads. Furthermore, numerous drivers lack professional training. Authorities are urged to enforce stricter safety regulations to prevent potential accidents and ensure the safety of pedestrians and residents.
A family friend of Gracia shared their grief, stating, "We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic demise of Gracia. Her untimely passing is a great loss." The community's plea underscores the need for immediate action to address these recurring safety issues on Pune's roads.
