A 65-year-old farmer from Pune fell victim to a clever theft when two conmen swindled his gold chain worth Rs 3 lakh near Kalewadi Phata on Tuesday. The farmer subsequently lodged a complaint with the Wakad police, who have initiated an investigation.
Incident Details
According to an officer from the Wakad police, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning when the farmer was waiting for his son near Kalewadi Phata. Two men on a motorcycle approached him and asked for directions to a nearby temple. The farmer provided the address, after which the duo claimed they wished to donate Rs 3,000 at the temple.
The officer explained that the conmen then requested the elderly man to remove his gold chain and touch it to the cash for good fortune. They even assisted him in removing the chain. When the farmer touched his chain to the cash, the duo took the chain, wrapped it in paper, and returned it to him. They also offered him a biscuit as 'prasad' before fleeing on their motorcycle.
Discovery of the Deception
Upon opening the paper, the farmer was shocked to find two stones instead of his gold chain. Realizing he had been duped, he immediately reported the incident to the police.
Police Investigation
The officer stated that the complainant provided descriptions of the suspects. The police have started examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the conmen. The investigation is ongoing.
