Pune Gangrape Survivor Completes In-Camera Evidence

The survivor of the gangrape and robbery that occurred at Bopdev ghat in Pune on October 3, 2024, completed the in-camera recording of her evidence on Saturday before the court of Additional Sessions Judge H M Bhosale. She provided a detailed account of how the three accused sexually assaulted her.

Court Orders Day-to-Day Hearing

Special prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar informed the Times of India that the court has directed a day-to-day hearing of the case starting Monday, June 1. A major portion of the survivor's evidence has been completed. On Monday, she will participate in identifying articles, including her ornaments that were robbed during the crime, her clothes, and a test identification parade before the court.

Survivor Recounts Assault and Injuries

Apart from recalling the heinous assault, the survivor also narrated the injuries she suffered during the attack and the prolonged treatment she had to undergo to recover from her injuries.

Accused Produced via Videoconferencing

The three accused—Chandrakumar Raviprasad Kanojiya, Shoeb alias Akhtar alias Aktar Jamir alias Jamal alias Babu Shaikh alias Lakhpati, and Bapya alias Somnath alias Suraj Dashrath Gosavi alias Yadav—were produced via videoconferencing from Yerawada Central Prison on Saturday. They will be physically produced before the court on Monday for the next hearing.

Background of the Case

The in-camera trial of the case began on February 13, 2026. The survivor, a 20-year-old event management student from Gujarat, was pursuing her studies in Pune. She and her friend, a chartered accountancy student from north Maharashtra, had gone to Bopdev Ghat for a night out around 11 pm on October 3, 2024.

Details of the Crime

An hour later, three men approached them near the 'Table Point' on the ghat along the Yewalewadi-Saswad Road. They thrashed the survivor's friend and forced him to remove his shirt and trouser belt, using them to tie him up. The accused then took turns raping the young woman and robbed her of a gold chain and rings. The crime sent shockwaves across the state.

Arrests Made

The police made their first arrest on October 11, 2024, with Kanojiya, a worker from Kadnagar in Undri. This was followed by the arrest of Shoeb, a ragpicker from Adarshnagar in Mantarwadi near Phursungi, who was nabbed in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on October 14, 2024. Shaikh has been identified as the ringleader of the group.

The third accused, Gosavi, a casual worker from Bhavaninagar Sansar in Indapur taluka, was arrested on April 26, 2025. He was caught at the old bus terminus in Walchandnagar near Akluj while trying to catch a bus.

Charges Filed

The three accused are being tried for offences under sections 70(1) (gangrape), 115(2) (causing hurt), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 309(6) (robbery), 352 (intentional insult), 351 (2) and (3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, besides provisions under the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act.
