The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has traced the methanol used in the spurious liquor that led to the recent hooch tragedy in Pune to a warehouse in Bhiwandi. The deadly substance was part of a supply chain involving multiple individuals, according to officials familiar with the investigation.
Key Accused Identified
Investigations revealed that Karnal Singh Virka procured the illicit liquor from a man named Wankhede. Wankhede, in turn, obtained the lethal methanol from Prajapati, a resident of Uruli Kanchan. The FDA is now probing how the methanol was sourced and distributed, and whether any other parties were involved in the chain.
Details of the Tragedy
The hooch tragedy, which occurred earlier this week, has claimed several lives and left many hospitalized. Victims consumed spurious liquor laced with methanol, a toxic substance often used in industrial applications. The FDA has intensified its crackdown on illegal liquor operations across the state.
Authorities are also examining records from the Bhiwandi warehouse to determine the volume of methanol stored and its intended use. Further arrests are expected as the investigation widens.
