Major Traffic Disruption on Pune-Mumbai Expressway Friday Evening
Commuters traveling between Pune and Mumbai encountered severe traffic congestion on the expressway during Friday evening rush hour, with significant delays reported particularly in the challenging ghat section. The vehicular movement on this critical speed corridor was briefly halted around 7 PM, resulting in a substantial slowdown that affected thousands of travelers.
Vehicle Breakdown Triggers Widespread Congestion
A senior traffic official confirmed that the disruption originated from a vehicle that broke down due to a battery issue in the ghat section on the Mumbai–Pune carriageway. This mechanical failure triggered a chain reaction of congestion that impacted traffic flow in both directions. One commuter traveling toward Pune reported that while vehicles from Mumbai were permitted to pass through, those heading from Pune toward Mumbai were held up for an extended period.
The resulting queue stretched an impressive 4-5 kilometers as authorities opened one side of the expressway to alleviate the mounting rush. This temporary measure, while necessary, contributed to the extended delays experienced by Friday evening travelers.
Strategic Traffic Management During Peak Periods
Swapnil Patil, assistant police inspector of the highway traffic police, explained that short traffic blocks of 12 to 14 minutes are routinely implemented on Fridays and weekends to manage increased vehicular load and prevent major congestion. "On Friday evening, one such block was implemented, slowing the traffic on one side," Patil stated. "Vehicles from Pune towards Mumbai were halted temporarily, and lanes were used for the traffic moving from Mumbai towards Pune to clear the buildup."
Patil emphasized that even a single vehicle breakdown in the sensitive ghat section could disrupt the overall traffic flow significantly. He noted that such proactive traffic blocks help prevent more severe congestion later in the night. The official also revealed that another traffic block was scheduled for Saturday morning as part of ongoing weekend traffic management strategies.
Weekend Travel Patterns Exacerbate Congestion
Another highway police official highlighted that a surge in weekend travel from Mumbai toward Pune consistently leads to increased traffic load and slower movement on the expressway. This predictable pattern, combined with unexpected incidents like vehicle breakdowns, creates challenging conditions for both commuters and traffic management authorities.
Rahul Patil, a frequent commuter on the route, expressed frustration that slow traffic in the ghat section has become a regular issue over the past two to three years. "The ghat stretch is very sensitive," he explained. "Even a single breakdown requiring towing can disrupt traffic for several kilometres. I hope the new missing link project, expected to open in May, helps ease the situation."
Authorities clarified that no accidents were reported during Friday's disruption, and traffic continued to move slowly throughout the evening. However, commuters like Rahul Patil are calling for long-term solutions as these recurring delays significantly increase travel time between the two major cities.
