Pune Police Crack Down on Drug Ring, Seize Marijuana Worth Rs 20 Lakh

In a significant operation, the Pune police crime branch has apprehended a roadside dhaba owner from Karmala in Solapur district along with three associates for illegal possession of marijuana valued at approximately Rs 20 lakh. The arrests highlight a troubling shift from legitimate business struggles to criminal activities in the region.

Arrests Made During Interception on Kesnand–Wadebolhai Road

On March 13, a dedicated police team led by senior inspector Santosh Sonawane and assistant inspector Madan Kamble, supported by constables including Hrushikesh Takwane and Prashant Kapure, intercepted a vehicle on Kesnand–Wadebolhai Road. The operation resulted in the detention of four individuals: Bhiwa Kalidas Waghmode (36), his relative Vishnu Bhagwat Waghmode (28), Hari Shripati Dhawale (32), and Manoj Anil Surwase (29), all hailing from Karmala in Solapur district.

During a thorough search of their car, authorities recovered a substantial 58.5 kilograms of marijuana. The following day, police expanded their efforts with raids in Karmala and neighboring villages, seizing an additional 14 kilograms of the contraband. Officials confirmed that the seized marijuana underwent examination over two days and was determined to be of high quality, underscoring the severity of the case.

Motivation Behind the Drug Trafficking Operation

According to police statements, the primary accused, Bhiwa Kalidas Waghmode, allegedly resorted to marijuana trafficking after encountering significant challenges in running his dhaba business. Specifically, he faced difficulties in procuring commercial LPG cylinders, which are essential for food preparation. This scarcity reportedly pushed him toward illicit activities as an alternative source of income.

Investigations reveal that Waghmode and his accomplices had traveled to Pune with the intent to sell the marijuana, indicating a planned and organized drug distribution network. The crime branch is actively pursuing another suspect believed to have supplied the contraband, and further probes are underway to ascertain whether any of the arrested individuals have prior criminal records.

Ongoing Investigation and Broader Implications

The case underscores the broader issue of economic pressures driving individuals toward crime, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. Police officials emphasize that the seizure and arrests are part of a larger crackdown on drug trafficking in the region, aiming to disrupt supply chains and deter similar activities.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are focused on unraveling the full extent of the drug network, including potential connections to other criminal elements. The public is urged to report any suspicious activities to help combat the drug trade and support community safety initiatives.
