Pune Police Crack Down on Drug-Laced Paan Sales with Latest Arrests

In a significant anti-narcotics operation, the Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch made two crucial arrests late Friday night, targeting the illegal trade of drug-laced paan. The primary suspect, a 25-year-old paan stall owner from Walhekarwadi, was apprehended alongside a 55-year-old grocery shop owner from Rajasthan who allegedly supplied the contraband.

Details of the Raid and Seizure

Acting on a specific tip-off, a specialized anti-narcotics cell team, under the leadership of senior police inspector Mahesh Patil, conducted a targeted raid on the paan stall located in Walhekarwadi. During the operation, law enforcement officials successfully seized contraband substances valued at approximately Rs 56,800 from the possession of the stall owner, identified as Dnyaneshwar Wankhede.

Inspector Patil provided critical insights into the case, stating, "We received credible information that this particular paan, commonly referred to as 'Kadak-Fulchand Paan,' was being sold at the Walhekarwadi stall. Our immediate raid led to the confiscation of the illicit materials." The investigation revealed that consumers were purchasing this paan specifically to experience an enhanced psychoactive effect.

Supply Chain Uncovered and Forensic Analysis

During intensive interrogation, Wankhede disclosed that the drug-laced powder was supplied by Mohanlal Bhati, a grocery shop owner operating from Rahatani. This revelation prompted the police to swiftly arrest Bhati, thereby disrupting a key link in the distribution network.

The seized powder underwent preliminary testing at a private laboratory, where it was confirmed to contain dangerous synthetic drugs, including:

  • Methamphetamine
  • Opiates
  • Other unidentified narcotic substances

According to police reports, the accused individuals were mixing these synthetic drugs into ordinary tobacco powder, which was then distributed to various paan stalls across the region. To determine the precise chemical composition, samples have been sent to a forensic laboratory for comprehensive analysis.

Ongoing Investigations and Broader Crackdown

This arrest is part of a broader, intensified crackdown by Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad crime branches on the sale of drug-laced paan. Recent operations include:

  1. A raid on March 13 by Pune police on a paan stall in Lonikalbhor involved in similar illegal activities.
  2. A joint operation on March 14 leading to the arrest of a Hinjewadi-based couple for manufacturing the drug-mixed powder, with contraband and equipment worth Rs 6.63 lakh seized.

Inspector Patil emphasized the commitment of the anti-narcotics cell, noting, "Our team is maintaining constant vigilance over such unlawful activities. We are determined to continue our rigorous actions against paan stalls engaged in the narcotics trade." The investigations remain active as authorities work to uncover further details and potentially more individuals involved in this illicit network.
