Pune Police Crack Down on Interstate Theft Ring, Arrest Two Suspects

In a significant breakthrough, the Pune police have apprehended two individuals accused of orchestrating a series of high-value thefts in the city's older neighborhoods and the adjoining Pimpri Chinchwad area. The arrested men, identified as Akash Subhas (23) from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, and Jitendra Chaturvedi (32) from Delhi, were taken into custody last month following an intensive investigation.

Details of the Arrest and Recovery

According to authorities from the Vishrambaug police station, the duo is believed to be responsible for at least five separate house burglary cases that were registered across multiple police jurisdictions, including Vishrambaug, Khadak, Samarth, and Bhosari. The police have successfully recovered gold and silver ornaments with an estimated total value of Rs 62 lakh from the suspects.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Krushikesh Rawale provided insights into the investigation. "We initiated our probe after registering a theft case at the Vishrambaug police station on January 18," he stated. "While reviewing CCTV footage, we traced the suspects to a local lodge. A subsequent search of their room led to the discovery of the stolen ornaments, which were found intact."

Modus Operandi and Gang Connections

The investigation revealed a sophisticated modus operandi employed by the accused. The duo reportedly traveled to various cities across India using flights or private vehicles to execute their thefts. Police officials have linked them to the infamous 'Sunny Gang', a criminal network known to be active in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

Both suspects have prior criminal records. "They are already named in murder and other serious bodily offence cases in their home states," DCP Rawale confirmed. Further checks with the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police, including biometric verification, were necessary to ascertain their true identities, as they initially provided false names to the investigating team.

Background of the Accused

Sub-inspector Rajesh Usgaonkar of the Vishrambaug police shared additional details about the suspects' backgrounds. "Both individuals have studied only up to Standard X. Akash Subhas had previously served a six-year prison sentence. After his release, he allegedly resumed criminal activities, focusing on thefts in Delhi and surrounding regions. He even purchased a car to facilitate these operations," Usgaonkar explained.

The police team, led by Senior Inspector Pradip Kasbe and Inspector Arun Ghodke, made the arrests. Following the apprehension, officers traveled to Meerut and Delhi to verify the suspects' records and recovered additional jewelry from two locations in those areas.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities are now working to determine if the duo is connected to other unsolved theft cases in different parts of the country. The use of air travel for criminal activities highlights a concerning trend of interstate crime networks operating with increased mobility. The Pune police continue their efforts to dismantle such networks and ensure the safety of residents.
