Pune Police Crack Down on Bus Theft Gang Using Child as Distraction
In a significant breakthrough, the Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch successfully apprehended a gang of six women on Sunday for systematically stealing gold jewellery from unsuspecting bus passengers. The police operation, which culminated in Shikrapur, led to the recovery of stolen gold ornaments valued at approximately Rs 90,000.
Modus Operandi: Toddler Used as Cover for Thefts
Senior Police Inspector Santosh Kasbe, who led the investigative team, revealed the gang's cunning tactics. The accused women, hailing from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Gulbarga in Karnataka, specifically targeted elderly female passengers traveling on PMPML or MSRTC buses.
The women consistently carried a toddler with them during their operations. After identifying a vulnerable target, one gang member would sit beside the elderly woman. Under the guise of breastfeeding the child, other accomplices would surround the victim, creating a cover while diverting her attention to execute the theft of jewellery or purses.
Investigation and Arrest Details
The crime branch team meticulously analyzed multiple CCTV footage recordings spanning from Bhosari MIDC to Shikrapur to track the gang's movements. "We examined footage from various autorickshaws and trucks to trace their route until Shikrapur," Inspector Kasbe explained to TOI.
Following the thefts, the women would promptly disembark at the next bus stop and flee the scene using autorickshaws or by hitchhiking in passing vehicles. This pattern helped investigators narrow down their search area.
Gang's Operation Timeline and Preventive Action
According to police reports, the gang had been actively operating in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad for approximately fifteen days prior to their arrest. "We suspect their involvement in several recent bus theft cases. Our timely intervention prevented them from committing further crimes," Kasbe emphasized.
The arrest highlights the importance of vigilance among public transport users, particularly elderly passengers carrying valuables. Police authorities continue to investigate potential connections to other theft incidents in the region.
