The Phursungi police in Pune have taken decisive action by registering a formal case of extortion against two reporters affiliated with an online news portal. The case, filed on Friday, centers on allegations that the journalists threatened and demanded a substantial sum of Rs 10 lakh from the owner of a local edible oil company.
Details of the Alleged Extortion Incident
According to official police statements, the incident unfolded on February 25 and 26, when the reporters allegedly made threatening communications to the businessman. The victim, a 24-year-old resident of Ambegaon who owns the edible oil company, promptly filed a complaint with the Phursungi police, leading to the registration of the case.
The company in question is situated on the Katraj–Kondhwa Road, while the accused reporters operate their news portal from an office located in the Katraj area of Pune. This proximity has raised questions about the motives behind their actions.
Misleading Report and Subsequent Demands
Police investigations reveal that the duo published an online report claiming the company's edible oil was of inferior quality. However, authorities noted a critical omission: the reporters failed to upload any supporting documents or evidence to back up their allegations. An officer from the Phursungi police emphasized this point, stating that the lack of substantiation casts doubt on the report's credibility.
In addition to the written article, the reporters uploaded a video showcasing the company's office in Katraj. The footage included visuals of the premises where edible oil is manufactured and packaged for sale in cans and pouches, potentially amplifying the negative impact on the business.
Extortion Attempt Following Publication
The situation escalated when, after publishing the story, the reporters contacted the company owner directly. They allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh as a condition to remove the link to the online story. This demand, coupled with the initial threats, forms the core of the extortion case now under police scrutiny.
