Pune Truck Driver Arrested for Drunk Driving After Multi-Vehicle Accident
The Alandi police in Pune took swift action on Saturday, arresting a truck driver involved in a serious accident on the Alandi–Markal road. The incident, which occurred on Friday night, resulted in the truck colliding with four vehicles, causing injuries to three individuals. Police investigations confirmed that the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol, leading to his immediate arrest.
Details of the Accident and Injuries
According to official reports from the Alandi police, the accident unfolded when a group of eleven pilgrims from Nashik district was traveling in an SUV. They had visited Alandi and were en route to Jejuri for their pilgrimage. Suddenly, a truck coming from the opposite direction struck their vehicle on the Alandi–Markal road. This collision resulted in injuries to two women and a ten-year-old girl who were passengers in the SUV.
The aftermath of the crash saw the complainant, Ramgir Gosavi, a forty-year-old tour operator from Nashik, and others pursuing the truck. During this chase, the truck driver continued his reckless driving, hitting additional vehicles before being forced to stop in Charholi. The group then pulled the driver from the cabin and assaulted him, but Gosavi intervened to rescue the driver and bring him to the police station.
Legal Charges and Police Response
The Alandi police officer stated that upon arrival at the station, it was evident the driver was intoxicated. He was promptly arrested under multiple legal provisions. The charges include section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to attempts to commit culpable homicide, as well as sections 184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for rash driving and drunk driving, respectively.
This case highlights the severe consequences of driving under the influence and the importance of road safety measures. The police have emphasized their commitment to enforcing traffic laws to prevent such incidents in the future.
