Punjab Chief Minister Launches 508 Emergency Response Vehicles to Enhance Public Safety

In a significant move to bolster law enforcement and public safety, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann officially flagged off 508 emergency response vehicles (ERVs) on Tuesday. This initiative is part of the state's ongoing efforts to modernize its police force and ensure rapid assistance to citizens in distress.

Dial-112 System Aims for Six-Minute Response Time

Chief Minister Mann announced that with the deployment of these new vehicles, police assistance across Punjab will now reach within six minutes under the Dial-112 emergency helpline system. "Punjab Police will now reach people in distress within six minutes, on a par with emergency response systems in the US and Europe," Mann stated, highlighting the state's commitment to matching global standards in emergency services.

Expansion of Fleet and Technological Upgrades

The newly launched ERVs will be distributed across all 28 police districts in Punjab, increasing the total Dial-112 fleet strength to 764 vehicles. Each vehicle is equipped with advanced technology, including GPS trackers, dash cameras, and mobile data systems, designed to facilitate faster and more efficient response times. This technological integration is expected to streamline operations and improve coordination during emergencies.

Improved Response Times and Call Handling

Mann provided insights into the current performance of the emergency helpline, noting that it receives approximately 15,000 calls daily. Of these, nearly 1,500 calls are dispatched for assistance. The average response time has already seen a significant reduction, dropping from 30–45 minutes to 13–14 minutes. The addition of the new vehicles is projected to further decrease this to the targeted six-minute mark, enhancing overall public trust and safety.

Substantial Investment in Police Modernization

The chief minister detailed the state's substantial investment in police vehicles over the past four years, amounting to Rs 327.69 crore. Since 2022, Punjab has purchased a total of 2,904 vehicles, ensuring that every police station in the state now has at least one new vehicle. This investment underscores the government's focus on upgrading infrastructure to support effective policing.

Impact on Law and Order and Economic Growth

Linking police modernization with improved law and order, Mann emphasized that the crackdown on drug trafficking has strengthened policing and enhanced security across Punjab. He also claimed that these efforts have boosted investor confidence, citing Tata Steel's establishment of its second-largest plant in the state as a testament to the improved business environment.

Road Safety Achievements

On the front of road safety, Mann highlighted the success of the state's Sadak Surakhiya Force. With 1,597 personnel and 144 vehicles, this specialized force has contributed to a 48% reduction in highway accident fatalities since its inception. This achievement reflects the broader strategy of using targeted initiatives to address specific public safety challenges.

The launch of these emergency response vehicles marks a pivotal step in Punjab's journey towards a more responsive and modern police force, aiming to provide swift assistance and foster a safer community for all residents.
