Punjab Police Foil Cross-Border Heroin Smuggling Operation Using Drones
The Fazilka unit of the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) has successfully intercepted a sophisticated cross-border narcotics smuggling operation, arresting two individuals and confiscating approximately 2 kilograms of heroin. This significant bust highlights the evolving tactics of drug traffickers utilizing drone technology from Pakistan.
Counter Intelligence Operation Leads to Arrests
The operation was meticulously executed by the Counter Intelligence wing based in Ferozepur. According to Rajwant Singh, the officer-in-charge of Counter Intelligence in Jalalabad, authorities received precise intelligence indicating that a heroin shipment was being dispatched from Pakistan to the BOP SS Wala sector in Jalalabad. The information suggested that local smugglers were poised to retrieve the illicit consignment upon arrival.
Acting swiftly on this tip-off, police teams established a strategic trap in the targeted area. Their vigilance paid off when they apprehended two suspects who were attempting to recover the narcotics. This proactive measure underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing in combating transnational crime networks.
Drone Delivery and Technical Failure Unravel Smuggling Plot
Initial investigations have uncovered that the heroin was transported via drone in two separate sorties from Pakistan. During the first flight, the drone successfully delivered one kilogram of heroin and returned to its origin. However, the second sortie encountered a critical technical malfunction, causing the drone to crash in nearby agricultural fields.
Following this mishap, Pakistani handlers communicated the GPS coordinates of the crashed drone to their Indian associates, instructing them to locate both the device and the remaining heroin consignment. As the accused combed the fields in search of the downed drone, police forces encircled the area and took them into custody without incident.
Identities of the Accused and Ongoing Investigation
The arrested individuals have been identified as Jagdish Singh, a resident of Ferozepur district, and Gursewak Singh, also known as Sevak, from Singhwa Bet in Ludhiana district. Law enforcement agencies are now intensively probing the broader smuggling network involved in this operation. Key areas of investigation include determining who ordered the heroin consignment and mapping the intended delivery chain within India.
Both accused were presented before a local court, which granted the police one day of custody for further interrogation. Authorities are currently questioning the suspects to extract crucial information that could lead to additional arrests and dismantle the entire smuggling syndicate. This case serves as a stark reminder of the innovative methods employed by drug cartels and the relentless efforts required by security forces to safeguard borders.
