The counter-intelligence (CI) wing of Patiala police on Monday dismantled a fake currency racket operating in Malerkotla, resulting in the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of counterfeit notes valued at Rs 5.5 lakh, as confirmed by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.
Details of the Operation
All recovered fake Indian currency notes were in denominations of Rs 500. The suspects have been identified as Nazar Khan, a resident of Jhunir village in Malerkotla; Raj Mohammad, from Dhuri in Sangrur; Mukhtiyar Singh alias Gurjit Singh, of Malikpur village in Haryana's Jind district; and Asif Ali, also from Malerkotla.
Investigation Highlights
DGP Yadav stated that preliminary investigations revealed Raj Mohammad has a prior case registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Authorities are now probing the network's forward and backward linkages to uncover the full extent of the operation.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of CI Patiala, Simrat Kaur, provided additional details: the CI unit first apprehended Nazar Khan and Raj Mohammad, recovering fake currency worth Rs 4 lakh from their possession. During subsequent investigations, police arrested the other two accused and recovered an additional Rs 1.5 lakh in counterfeit notes.
Legal Action
A case has been registered under Sections 179 and 180 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Amargarh police station in Malerkotla, and further inquiries are ongoing.
