Punjab Police Implements Enhanced Security Protocols After Fatal Gurdaspur Incident
In response to the tragic killing of two policemen last month, the Punjab Police has issued a comprehensive set of security directives for battalion commandants across the state. The move aims to bolster safety measures and prevent similar attacks in the future.

The security overhaul comes nearly a month after two policemen were found dead with gunshot wounds inside a check post in Adhiya village, Gurdaspur district, on February 22. The incident raised serious concerns about the security arrangements at police installations and prompted immediate action from senior officials.
Key Directives from High-Level Meeting
During a crucial meeting chaired by the ADGP of the State Armed Police on March 2, several specific instructions were issued to enhance security protocols:
- Battalion commandants must conduct monthly inspections of guard deployments
- Gazetted officers are required to perform these inspections twice monthly
- Random video calling will be implemented to obtain security-related reports
- Safety nets must be deployed around guard posts and adjacent areas as protection against grenade attacks
The directive explicitly states that these measures are being implemented "in the wake of attack on two policemen in Gurdaspur district, to ensure safety from such attacks and to ensure safety of the personnel."
Heightened Alert for Personnel Safety
Officers attending the meeting received additional instructions regarding personnel security. Given the prevailing security situation in Punjab, strict directions have been issued to jawans returning home after duty to pay special attention to their personal security.
The commandants of armed battalions have been specifically instructed to ensure foolproof security at their respective battalion headquarters, with particular emphasis on protecting against potential attacks similar to the Gurdaspur incident.
Broader Security Concerns Emerge
The Gurdaspur killings have triggered security concerns beyond regular police units. The Sadak Surakhya Force (SSF), a dedicated force primarily responsible for assisting road accident victims, has formally requested weapons for their personnel's safety.
In their communication to district police chiefs, the SSF cited safety concerns specifically referencing the murder of the two policemen in Gurdaspur. Special DGP (Traffic & Road Safety Wing) A S Rai confirmed that "the security of the SSF vehicles has been ensured by providing weapons to them."
