Punjab VB Nabs ASI Red-Handed in Bribery Case

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has apprehended Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jaswinder Singh, who was posted at Shutrana police station in Patran, Patiala district, while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 18,000. This arrest was made as part of the bureau's ongoing anti-corruption drive in the state.

Complaint and Investigation

According to an official spokesperson of the state VB, the accused was arrested based on a complaint filed by a resident of Bakraha village in Patran tehsil, Patiala district. The complainant's relatives had been injured in a fight with their neighbors. A doctor at Rajindra Hospital reported the matter to Shutrana police station while treating the injured individuals. The accused ASI then visited the hospital to record the statements of the injured persons.

The spokesperson added that the accused ASI demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant in exchange for initiating legal action against the other party involved in the attack. After negotiations, the accused ASI agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 18,000.

Trap Operation

Unwilling to pay the illegal gratification, the complainant approached the VB Range in Patiala. Acting on the complaint, a VB team laid a trap. During the operation, the accused ASI was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe money of Rs 18,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.

Legal Action

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the VB police station in Patiala. Further investigation into the case is currently in progress.
