In a heartening display of efficiency and dedication, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Tamil Nadu successfully recovered and returned valuable jewellery and cash to a relieved woman passenger who had left them behind on a train. The swift action prevented a significant financial loss for a retired couple from Salem.
The Unfortunate Oversight on a Tiring Journey
M Thirumaran, 62, a retired transport officer, and his 57-year-old wife Tamil Selvi, were returning to their home in Maramangalathupatty, Salem district, from Kovilpatti. They had travelled overnight on the Nagercoil Express, arriving at the Salem railway station in the early hours of Monday. Fatigued from the journey, Tamil Selvi inadvertently left her handbag on the train while deboarding.
The handbag was no ordinary purse; it contained eight sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹3,000 in cash, representing a substantial portion of the family's savings and sentimental valuables. The realisation of the loss dawned on them soon after, prompting immediate action.
Swift Police Action Leads to Recovery
Upon discovering the loss, the distressed couple approached the Salem railway police and lodged a formal complaint. Understanding the urgency, the Salem police team promptly alerted their colleagues who were on patrol duty aboard the moving Nagercoil Express.
The on-duty railway police officers sprang into action. They conducted a search inside the train compartments and, to everyone's relief, located the forgotten handbag. The recovered belongings were then securely handed over to the Dharmapuri railway police for formal verification and return procedures.
Joyful Reunion with Belongings
By Tuesday, the recovery process was complete. The Dharmapuri railway police officials verified the details from the complaint and returned the handbag with all its contents intact to the grateful couple. The entire operation, from the complaint to the return, was wrapped up within a day, showcasing remarkable coordination between different railway police units.
Thirumaran and Tamil Selvi expressed profound gratitude to the railway police force for their prompt and honest efforts.
