Rajasthan Youth Arrested for Alleged Links to Pakistan-Based Terror Handler
In a significant security development, a 20-year-old man has been apprehended in Sriganganagar district of Rajasthan for suspected connections to a Pakistan-based terrorist handler. The arrest, which occurred on Thursday, highlights growing concerns about cross-border recruitment through social media platforms.
Details of the Arrest and Investigation
The individual, identified as Akashdeep Singh, was taken into custody following a tip-off from a local constable regarding his suspicious online activities. Police authorities disclosed that Singh allegedly boasted about his ties to Pakistani terrorists and used these claims to intimidate villagers in the area.
Investigations have revealed that Singh was in direct communication with Shahzad Bhatti, an underworld figure believed to be operating a cross-border module. This communication primarily took place via Instagram and WhatsApp, with police detecting numerous exchanges, including voice chats, using a phone number with the Pakistani international calling code (+92).
Background on Shahzad Bhatti and Security Concerns
The connection to Bhatti is particularly alarming for security forces due to his previous involvement in terrorist activities. On March 13, associates of Bhatti were arrested in Ambala while allegedly planning a major explosive attack, leading to the seizure of significant quantities of explosives. Another associate, Jaswant Kumar alias Sonu, was subsequently arrested in Hanumangarh Town.
Authorities are now investigating the possibility that Bhatti has been actively targeting youth in border districts for recruitment or influence through social media. A police official stated, "Bhatti has been reaching out to youth in border districts using Instagram and WhatsApp to build contacts and assign tasks. This is a disturbing trend, especially considering his known affiliations with Pakistan's ISI."
Ongoing Investigation and National Security Implications
Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Singh, and a comprehensive investigation is underway under the supervision of senior law enforcement officers. The probe aims to uncover any additional connections or networks that might threaten national security.
An official noted, "There is a possibility that the ISI is using Bhatti for nefarious designs in border districts of Rajasthan." This case underscores the evolving tactics of cross-border terrorism, leveraging digital platforms to exploit vulnerable youth in sensitive regions.
The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges along the border and the critical need for vigilance against online radicalization efforts targeting Indian citizens.
