Rajkot: Migrant Labourer's 12-Year-Old Daughter Allegedly Raped by Distant Relative

In a deeply disturbing incident from Rajkot district, a 12-year-old girl, the daughter of a migrant farm labourer, was allegedly raped by a distant relative. The crime, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, has led to two separate police complaints being filed at the Bhayavadar police station, highlighting not only the sexual assault but also subsequent violence against the victim's family when they attempted to report the atrocity.

Timeline of the Alleged Crime and Aftermath

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the sexual assault took place around 1:00 AM on Monday. The victim's father, a 45-year-old farm labourer originally from Dahod district, stated that his daughter confided in him on Tuesday, revealing that the distant relative had forced himself upon her the previous night. The family first became aware of an interaction between the girl and the accused at approximately 1:30 AM on Monday, when the girl's sister-in-law spotted them near the farm. The accused immediately fled the scene upon being seen.

It was only on Tuesday evening that the young girl disclosed the full extent of the assault, confirming she had been raped. Following this heartbreaking revelation, the family decided to approach the authorities to file an official complaint. However, their pursuit of justice was met with further violence and intimidation.

Farm Owner Assaults Victim's Family During Complaint Process

As the family prepared to file the rape complaint, the farm owner, on whose land the accused man's family works, allegedly confronted and physically attacked the victim's father and brother. The farm owner aggressively questioned them about their intention to go to the police and reportedly threatened to kill them if they continued to pursue the case. The situation escalated until relatives intervened, stopping the assault and preventing potential further harm.

Police Register Two Separate Complaints

In response to these events, the Bhayavadar police have registered two distinct complaints. The first is against the distant relative for the alleged rape and includes charges under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The second complaint targets the farm owner for assault, intimidation, and issuing death threats against the victim's family members.

Investigating Officer V C Parmar provided an update on the case, stating, "We have detained the farm owner who assaulted the victim's family members and are actively searching for the person accused of rape." This dual approach underscores the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating both the primary crime and the subsequent obstruction of justice.

Broader Context and Community Impact

This incident sheds light on the vulnerabilities faced by migrant labour communities, particularly women and children, who often work in isolated agricultural settings. The additional layer of violence against the family when seeking legal recourse raises alarming questions about power dynamics, access to justice, and protection for marginalized groups. The case continues to develop as authorities work to apprehend the rape accused and ensure a thorough investigation into both complaints.
