Dalit Community Protests in Rajkot Following Murder of Bhavesh Vanvi
The city of Rajkot witnessed significant law and order tensions on Monday night following the murder of 32-year-old Bhavesh Vanvi, which sparked large-scale protests by members of the Dalit community outside Civil Hospital.
Details of the Murder Case
According to police reports, Bhavesh Vanvi was allegedly kidnapped near Dream City in the Raiyadhar area on Sunday night. He was later found dumped near Sheetal Park in critical condition and rushed to Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Monday.
The news of his death prompted immediate reaction from the Dalit community, with protesters gathering at the hospital and refusing to accept the body for last rites. Demonstrators blocked the hospital square, raised slogans, and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the killing.
Police Response and Arrests
Police intervened to control the volatile situation, detaining 20 individuals including some community leaders for rioting and obstructing public servants. A formal case was registered at the A Division police station.
During the protests, assistant sub-inspector Sanjay Dafda of the Rajkot city crime branch was allegedly pushed and assaulted while on duty, leading to an additional complaint being filed.
Meanwhile, police have arrested three persons in connection with the murder: Ravi Jogarana (33), Sagar Jogarana (26), and Gopal Jogarana (22). According to investigating officer Chintan Patel, the prime accused Hamir Jogarana remains absconding along with others identified as Dev Karan, Vikram, and Bhuro.
Background and Motive
Preliminary investigation suggests the crime stemmed from a personal dispute. Police sources indicate Vanvi was in a relationship with a woman, and tensions escalated after he allegedly discovered her communication with prime accused Hamir Jogarana on Instagram.
The dispute had previously led to complaints from both sides. According to police sources, Hamir had earlier filed an application alleging that Vanvi, the woman, and others were attempting to blackmail him with threats of filing false cases for molestation and rape.
Both the deceased and prime accused have criminal records. Vanvi was earlier booked in cases related to prohibition, assault, and rioting, while Hamir has a previous case registered under the Arms Act.
Current Situation and Police Efforts
Police authorities have stated that efforts are actively underway to apprehend the absconding accused and maintain law and order in the affected areas of Rajkot. The situation remains tense but under police supervision as investigations continue into both the murder and the subsequent protests.
The incident has highlighted ongoing community tensions in the region, with police working to balance investigation of the crime with management of public demonstrations and maintaining overall public safety.
