Ranchi Witnesses Dramatic High-Speed Police Chase After Drunk SUV Rampage
In a scene reminiscent of a Bollywood thriller, Ranchi was gripped by chaos in the early hours of Tuesday as two intoxicated men embarked on a violent rampage in an SUV, injuring multiple individuals and engaging in a tense two-hour police chase before their eventual arrest.
Altercation Sparks Violent Escalation
The incident began around 3 AM near Kutchery Chowk when the accused, identified as Ishtiyaq Ansari (25) and Gurfan Ansari (30), both residents of Nagri, had a heated altercation with a group of transgenders. Reports indicate the duo was consuming alcohol with the group when the disagreement turned physical.
Bunty Kumar, who was nearby with friends, intervened to stop the brawl. However, the situation worsened dramatically. The Ansari duo brutally assaulted Bunty, forced him into their SUV, and then callously ran over the legs of a transgender person while fleeing the scene. The victim sustained critical injuries and was later hospitalized.
Chaotic Escape and Police Pursuit
As the SUV sped away, a group of youths attempted to block its path, but the vehicle struck them, injuring two more individuals. One was left at the scene, while the assailants took the already-captive Bunty Kumar with them as they fled towards Ratu.
Senior Police Officer Paras Rana confirmed that the motive behind the rampage was sheer intoxication. "Both were heavily drunk," he stated, attributing their actions to alcohol-induced recklessness.
Alerted by Bunty's friends and the transgender group, police launched an immediate pursuit. The SUV, driven erratically, weaved through Ring Road, Ratu Road, Kanke, and other areas, creating widespread panic.
Dramatic Chase and Arrest
The chase intensified as the suspects evaded police barricades three times. In a dangerous maneuver, they rammed into the vehicle of Kotwali DSP Prakash Soy before escaping. Near Mandar around 5 AM, police resorted to firing at the SUV's tires to halt it. During this exchange, a bullet struck Ishtiyaq Ansari in the back.
Gurfan Ansari then took control of the vehicle and drove to a private hospital near Piska More in a desperate attempt to get medical help for his injured accomplice. However, pursuing police teams swiftly surrounded the hospital and apprehended both men.
Aftermath and Historical Context
Ishtiyaq Ansari is currently receiving treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, while Gurfan Ansari remains in police custody. All injured victims are reported to be out of danger. Forensic experts have examined the involved SUV at Kotwali police station.
This alarming incident marks the second such case in Ranchi this year. On January 4, three men killed a Garhwa resident by running him over with a four-wheeler in Lalpur, highlighting a concerning pattern of vehicular violence in the city.
