Ranchi Traffic Police Takes Stern Action Against Noise Pollution

In a dramatic move to curb noise pollution and enforce traffic regulations, the Ranchi traffic department conducted a public destruction of approximately 600 seized pressure horns and modified silencers on Saturday. The event, held at Police Lines, marked the first such initiative in the district and utilized a bulldozer to crush the illegal items, sending a clear message to violators.

Crackdown on Illegal Pressure Horns

The pressure horns were confiscated during recent vehicle-checking drives aimed at ensuring compliance with road safety standards. According to traffic officials, these horns are prohibited under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act - 1988, and their use poses significant health risks.

"These pressure horns produce loud, ear-piercing sounds that can lead to health complications, especially among elderly individuals and children," stated SP (Ranchi rural) Praveen Pushkar. He emphasized that the drives against such violations will be intensified in the coming weeks.

Response to High Court Directives

SP (Traffic) Rakesh Singh highlighted that the action aligns with the Jharkhand High Court's instructions to reduce noise pollution. "In the last three months alone, challans have been issued against 2,000 vehicles for using pressure horns," he revealed.

Singh explained that the public destruction was strategically organized to deter others from investing in illegal modifications. "We want to send a strong message that these items will be seized and destroyed if caught, so people should refrain from spending money on them," he added.

Legal and Community Support

Ranchi district bar association secretary Sanjay Vidrohi advocated for strict enforcement of the law, particularly against repeat offenders. He stressed that no exceptions should be made for private, passenger, or government vehicles, ensuring uniform application of regulations.

Expanded Drives Against Drunk Driving

In addition to targeting noise pollution, police have ramped up efforts against drunk driving. Singh noted that "every day, more than half a dozen drivers are caught in an inebriated state in the city and fined." The penalty for such offenses can reach up to Rs 10,000, underscoring the seriousness of the crackdown.

This comprehensive approach by Ranchi authorities aims to enhance road safety and public health, addressing multiple traffic violations through visible enforcement actions.
