Recent Years' Deadliest Air Crashes: A Global Overview
The aviation industry has faced numerous tragic incidents in recent years, highlighting critical safety concerns and the devastating human toll of air disasters. From runway collisions to mid-air crashes, these events have shaped global aviation policies and underscored the need for enhanced safety measures.
2026: Air Canada Express Runway Collision
In a recent incident, an Air Canada Express regional jet collided with a fire truck while landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Sunday, March 23, 2026. The accident resulted in the deaths of the pilot and co-pilot, marking a sobering start to the year for aviation safety. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of this fatal runway mishap.
2025: Major Crashes in India and the United States
The year 2025 witnessed one of the deadliest aviation disasters in a decade. In June, an Air India flight bound for London crashed minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India. This tragedy claimed the lives of all but one of the 242 people on board, along with 19 individuals on the ground, making it a catastrophic event with widespread repercussions.
In the United States, November saw a UPS cargo plane crash shortly after departing from Louisville, Kentucky, killing seven people and injuring 11 on the ground. Earlier in the year, on January 29, an American Airlines regional jet collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, resulting in over 60 fatalities.
2024: International Disasters in South Korea and Kazakhstan
South Korea experienced its deadliest air disaster on domestic soil in December 2024, when a Jeju Air international flight crashed at Muan International Airport. All 175 passengers and four of the six crew members perished in this horrific incident.
In a separate event, an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer E190, diverted from Russia to Kazakhstan, crashed on December 25, 2024, killing 38 people. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev suggested the plane was damaged by accidental ground fire in Russia, though Moscow has not confirmed this claim.
Japan also faced a serious incident on January 2, 2024, when a Japan Airlines Airbus A350 collided with a Coast Guard aircraft on the runway at Tokyo's Haneda airport. Miraculously, all 379 passengers aboard the JAL plane escaped, but five of the six crew members on the smaller aircraft lost their lives.
2022: China's Deadliest Crash in Decades
On March 21, 2022, a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 crashed into a mountainous area in Guangxi, southwestern China. All 132 people on board were killed, marking the country's worst aviation disaster in 28 years and prompting extensive safety reviews.
2020: Iran's Tragic Shootdown
In January 2020, Iran's Revolutionary Guards shot down a Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737-800 shortly after it took off from Tehran Airport. All 176 passengers and crew died in this incident, which Iran's civil aviation body attributed to a misaligned radar and human error by an air defence operator.
2019 and 2018: Boeing 737 MAX Crises
The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft faced global scrutiny after two fatal crashes. In March 2019, an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-MAX 8 crashed minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people on board. This followed the October 2018 crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX into the Java Sea after departing Jakarta, which claimed 189 lives. These incidents led to the worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX fleet over safety concerns.
2014: Malaysian Airlines Disasters
2014 was a particularly dark year for aviation, with two major incidents involving Malaysian Airlines. Flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, during conflict between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces, killing all 298 people on board. Earlier that year, Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with the Boeing 777 and its 239 passengers and crew never found, remaining one of aviation's greatest mysteries.
These air crashes serve as stark reminders of the vulnerabilities in global aviation systems. They emphasize the ongoing need for rigorous safety protocols, thorough investigations, and international cooperation to prevent future tragedies and ensure safer skies for all.
