A massive explosion near the Red Fort Metro Gate No. 1 on Monday evening has left the national capital in shock, resulting in 13 fatalities and over 24 individuals injured. Delhi Police have identified Dr Umar Un Nabi as the prime suspect, with a trail of CCTV evidence meticulously tracing his movements across the city on the day of the incident.
CCTV Trail: A Suspect's Journey Through Delhi
The investigation took a significant turn as multiple CCTV clips surfaced, painting a clear picture of Dr Umar's path. The first sighting occurred early on 10 November at the Badarpur border toll gate at 8:02 AM. Footage shows Dr Umar driving a white Hyundai i20, briefly stopping to hand cash to the attendant. Authorities highlighted a critical detail: a large bag was visible on the back seat, which they believe contained the explosive material used in the subsequent attack.
Later that day, he was spotted at the Turkman Gate Mosque, located near the Red Fort, with viral footage confirming his presence. Investigators noted his cautious behavior. "His repeated glances toward the CCTV camera suggest that he knew the agencies were looking for him, and he was consciously monitoring his surroundings," a senior police officer told PTI. Dr Umar was seen wearing a face mask, further indicating his awareness of potential surveillance.
The Final Hours Before the Explosion
The suspect's movements were tracked to the Sunehri Masjid parking lot, another location close to the Red Fort. He arrived there at 3:19 PM and departed at 6:28 PM. This departure was a mere 24 minutes before the fatal explosion that rocked the area at 6:52 PM.
The blast, centred on the white Hyundai i20, was of such intensity that it severely damaged nearby vehicles and scattered debris across the roadway. The force of the explosion led to the tragic loss of life and multiple injuries.
Investigation and Aftermath
In the wake of the attack, a multi-pronged investigation is underway. Forensic teams have collected more than 40 samples from the blast site, including the mangled remains of the vehicle and human remains. A specialist team has been established to analyse these materials and definitively determine the type of explosives used.
Confirming the driver's identity, a DNA test of samples from the blast site has matched with Dr Umar Nabi. To facilitate this, his mother's DNA samples were collected on Tuesday and sent for examination.
Police efforts are now intensely focused on reconstructing Dr Umar’s movements throughout the entire day and tracing his potential handlers or any accomplices who may have assisted him. The investigation has revealed that Dr Umar, known in his circles as an academically accomplished professional, had allegedly turned radical over the past two years.
