Retired Police Officer Arrested for Failing to Appear in Court for Murder Trial
In a significant development in a high-profile murder case, a retired sub-inspector was arrested by Amethi police and produced before a court in Kanpur on Tuesday. The arrest came after the officer repeatedly evaded court appearances to present crucial evidence.
Details of the Murder Case and Court Proceedings
According to the additional district government counsel, the case involves the murder of Saif alias Bholu, who was shot by his friend Salman alias Kana on May 26, 2023. The incident occurred in the Moolganj area during a heated argument over a financial dispute. Saif later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The court had been unable to proceed with the trial due to the absence of prosecution witness SI Nankau Saroj. Despite multiple summons, a bailable warrant, and even a non-bailable warrant, Saroj consistently failed to appear in court to provide his testimony.
High Court Intervention and Judicial Actions
Presiding officer Subhash Singh wrote a letter to the Superintendent of Police in Amethi district on April 4, highlighting that the High Court had directed the disposal of the case in a time-bound manner. However, witness Nankau Saroj's continued absence was obstructing the judicial process.
In his letter, the judicial official suggested that until Saroj completed his evidence and received a certificate from the court, the disbursement of his pension should be stopped. The court also requested to be informed of any actions taken in compliance with this order.
Recently, the High Court asked for a detailed report on the developments in the case, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the matter promptly.
Arrest and Court Appearance
On Tuesday, Amethi police finally arrested the retired sub-inspector and produced him before the court of additional session judge XI in Kanpur. Saroj adduced his evidence in court, but the proceedings could not be concluded, leading to the evidence being put on hold for further sessions.
This arrest underscores the judiciary's commitment to ensuring that witnesses comply with legal obligations, especially in serious cases like murder trials. The case continues to be monitored closely by higher judicial authorities to ensure timely justice.
