Phone Stolen at Motera Stadium: Retired SRPF Cop Files Complaint After T20 Match
Retired cop's phone stolen at Narendra Modi Stadium during T20

A distressing incident of theft marred the excitement of a high-profile cricket match in Ahmedabad, when a retired police officer found himself a victim of pickpocketing. The event underscores the challenges of managing security in massive public gatherings, even at a world-class venue.

Incident Details: Theft Amidst Cricket Frenzy

Vinod Nathani, a 65-year-old retired State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) personnel, was attending the much-anticipated India vs South Africa T20 international at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. According to the complaint lodged with Chandkheda police, the incident occurred on December 19 around 7:00 PM.

Nathani was navigating through a dense crowd near Gate No. 1 of the stadium when an unidentified individual allegedly took advantage of the chaotic situation. It was only later that he realized his mobile phone, valued at approximately Rs 12,000, was missing from his pocket. Despite an immediate search of the surrounding area, the handset could not be located.

Police Investigation Underway

Following the unsuccessful personal search, Vinod Nathani formally registered his grievance through an online complaint system the next day. Upon receiving the complaint, Chandkheda police have initiated a full investigation into the theft.

A key avenue being pursued by the investigators is tracking the device using its unique IMEI number. This number acts as a digital fingerprint for mobile phones and can be crucial in locating a stolen device if it is activated on a network. The police are examining CCTV footage from the vicinity of Gate No. 1 to identify the suspect who exploited the crowded conditions.

A Cautionary Tale for Large Events

This incident highlights a persistent issue at major sporting and entertainment events where large, excited crowds become targets for petty criminals. The fact that the victim was a retired member of a disciplined police force himself adds a layer of irony to the crime.

Authorities often advise attendees of such mega-events to remain vigilant about their personal belongings. Simple precautions can prevent such losses:

  • Keeping valuables in secured, zipped pockets or bags.
  • Avoiding carrying excessive cash or expensive items unnecessarily.
  • Remaining aware of one's surroundings, especially in packed areas.

The Chandkheda police's probe continues as they work to trace the stolen phone and apprehend the culprit, sending a message about security at public venues in Ahmedabad.
