The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a case against a retired engineer of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) for allegedly accumulating assets worth Rs 68.98 lakh, which is 70 percent above his known sources of income. The case follows a detailed investigation into his decade-long service.
Case Registered Against Rasik Patel
The ACB’s Surat unit filed a disproportionate assets (DA) case against Rasik Patel, who served as an assistant engineer with the SMC from January 2011 to March 2020. According to investigators, Patel employed various unlawful practices during his tenure to build his wealth, amounting to criminal misconduct under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Police Inspector K J Dhaduk lodged the complaint, and the investigation has been assigned to Police Inspector S D Dhobi.
Details of Assets Found
R R Chaudhary, Assistant Director of ACB, stated, “We received a complaint against Patel in 2020 alleging that he had accumulated properties through illegal means during his service. Our investigation revealed that he constructed two houses — one in Adajan, Surat, and another in his native Dharampur. Additionally, Rs 40 lakh was found in his bank accounts. He also owned a high-end car worth Rs 19 lakh and three two-wheelers. Furthermore, he had invested in several insurance policies.”
Based on his income and expenses over the 10-year check period, Patel was found to have assets exceeding his known income by 70.13 percent, amounting to Rs 68.98 lakh.
Retirement and Ongoing Probe
Patel retired from the SMC on August 31, 2025. The ACB is continuing its investigation to ascertain the full extent of his assets and financial transactions. Authorities are examining bank records, property documents, and other financial dealings to build a comprehensive case.
The development underscores the ACB’s commitment to tackling corruption among public officials, particularly those in municipal bodies responsible for urban development and infrastructure projects.
