A 25-year-old man was shot dead in Ropar district of Punjab in what police suspect is a revenge killing. The accused reportedly confessed to the crime on social media, claiming the victim had killed his brother earlier.
Incident Details
The incident took place in the Chamkaur Sahib area of Ropar on Tuesday evening. The victim, identified as Gurpreet Singh, was attacked by a group of assailants who fired multiple shots at him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
According to police, the accused, identified as Amandeep Singh, posted a video on Facebook confessing to the murder. In the video, he claimed that Gurpreet had murdered his brother in 2022 and that the killing was an act of revenge.
Police Investigation
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ropar, Swarandeep Singh, said that a case has been registered and a manhunt is underway to arrest the accused. “We have identified the accused and are conducting raids to apprehend him. The victim’s family has been informed, and we are investigating the motive behind the murder,” he said.
Police have also seized the vehicle used in the crime and are examining CCTV footage from the area. The accused’s social media post has been taken down, but screenshots have been preserved as evidence.
Background
Gurpreet Singh was previously involved in a criminal case related to the murder of Amandeep’s brother. The case was pending in court. Police suspect that the murder was premeditated and that the accused had been planning the attack for some time.
The incident has sparked tension in the area, with locals demanding swift action. Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order.
