Robert Vadra, the husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has moved the Delhi High Court challenging a trial court order that summoned him in a money laundering case investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The case pertains to allegations of illegal acquisition of assets and money laundering involving a company linked to Vadra.
Background of the Case
The Enforcement Directorate had filed a prosecution complaint against Vadra and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with the purchase of a luxury farmhouse in Haryana's Shikarpur region. The ED alleged that the property was purchased using proceeds of crime and that Vadra was involved in the money laundering process.
Trial Court's Order
In November 2024, a special PMLA court in Delhi took cognizance of the ED's complaint and issued summons to Vadra, directing him to appear before the court. Vadra challenged this order, arguing that the trial court failed to consider his submissions and that the summons was issued without proper application of mind.
Vadra's counsel argued before the High Court that the ED's case was based on conjectures and lacked substantive evidence. They contended that the property in question was acquired through legitimate means and that there was no basis for the money laundering allegations.

The Delhi High Court is expected to hear Vadra's plea seeking quashing of the trial court's summoning order. The ED, on its part, has opposed the plea, stating that there is sufficient material on record to proceed against Vadra. The agency has maintained that the investigation revealed a complex web of transactions designed to launder money.
This is not the first time Vadra has faced legal scrutiny. He has been under investigation by the ED in multiple cases related to alleged financial irregularities. In 2020, he was granted anticipatory bail in a separate money laundering case involving the purchase of a London property.

The case has political overtones, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the Congress party of corruption. Vadra's legal battle is being closely watched as it could have implications for the Gandhi family's political fortunes. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has defended her husband, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated.
The High Court's decision on Vadra's plea is awaited. If the court rules in his favor, it could set aside the summons and provide relief to Vadra. However, if the court upholds the trial court's order, Vadra will have to appear before the special PMLA court to face the proceedings.
