Gorakhpur Police Seize Rs 50 Lakh Cash, Suspect Hawala Racket
Rs 50 Lakh Cash Seized in Gorakhpur, Hawala Suspected

In a significant operation, the Cantt police in Gorakhpur intercepted a massive cash haul of Rs 50 lakh on Friday night, leading to the detention of a 52-year-old man and raising suspicions of an illegal hawala transaction.

Interception Near Railway Station Gate

The incident unfolded near Gate No. 6 of the Gorakhpur railway station. Police officials, acting on vigilance, noticed the suspicious movements of the accused, identified as Rajiv Jaiswal alias Raju. Jaiswal is a resident of Dumariyaganj in the Siddharthnagar district.

According to the police timeline, Jaiswal had arrived at the Gorakhpur bus stand around 5 pm. He was then seen walking towards Dharamshala Bazaar via the railway station premises. His journey took a dramatic turn when two unidentified youths on a scooter approached him, handed over a bag, and swiftly left the scene.

The Cash Recovery and Questioning

The man's behavior after receiving the bag attracted police attention. Upon searching the bag, officers were stunned to find it stuffed with bundles of cash, totaling a whopping Rs 50 lakh.

During preliminary questioning, Rajiv Jaiswal failed to provide a credible explanation for the source of the money. He claimed he did not know the scooter-borne youths and stated that he had merely been tasked with delivering the cash to a location in Farenda. Crucially, he carried no documentary proof to justify the possession of such a large sum.

Joint Probe and Ongoing Investigation

Following the recovery, the Cantt police immediately informed the Income Tax Department. A joint team from both agencies counted the entire sum, sealed it, and took the cash into official custody for further legal proceedings.

SP City Abhinav Tyagi confirmed that the matter is under active investigation. The primary focus of the probe is now to identify the two scooter-borne youths who handed over the bag and unravel the larger network behind this suspected hawala operation. The police are examining all angles to determine the origin and intended destination of the seized funds.
