Salem Man Detained Under Goondas Act for Series of Crimes Including Murder
Salem man detained under Goondas Act for serial offences

In a significant crackdown on habitual offenders, the Salem district administration has invoked the stringent Goondas Act against a 30-year-old man with a history of serious criminal cases. The order, aimed at preventive detention, was issued by District Collector R Brindha Devi following a detailed review of the individual's escalating criminal record.

Collector's Order Based on Police Recommendation

District Collector R Brindha Devi issued the formal detention directive after receiving a strong recommendation from District Superintendent of Police Gautam Goyal. The police report meticulously outlined the accused's criminal journey, which demonstrated a clear pattern of increasing severity in offences. The detainee, identified as P Karthik, aged 30, is currently held at the Salem Central Prison in connection with a burglary case.

A Timeline of Escalating Crimes

According to Sankari police inspector T Ramesh, Karthik's criminal activities began in 2021 with the theft of an LPG cylinder from a local shop. His offences grew more audacious over the years. In 2024, he was arrested for stealing a motorcycle. The following year, in 2025, he faced charges in connection with a murder case.

His most recent arrest occurred on November 4, when the Sankari police apprehended him for a major burglary. In this incident, Karthik allegedly stole 16 sovereigns of gold jewellery from a residential property. This final act proved to be the tipping point, prompting authorities to seek long-term preventive detention.

The Legal Ramifications of the Goondas Act

The invocation of the Goondas Act represents a serious legal step by the Salem administration. This act allows for the preventive detention of individuals deemed habitual offenders or a threat to public order, often leading to extended periods of incarceration without immediate bail. The decision underscores the administration's zero-tolerance approach towards recidivism and its commitment to public safety.

By moving to detain Karthik under this powerful legislation, the district collector and police have signaled their intent to break the cycle of crime. The case highlights the collaborative process between the district's top civil and police officials in tackling persistent criminal elements within the community.
