The devastating accident on the Samruddhi Expressway in Jalna district has taken an even more tragic turn, with the death toll rising to eight late Wednesday night. Another critically injured laborer, identified as Mangalabai Shingare, succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital, adding to the profound loss from this horrific incident.
Police Confirm Drunk Driving, File Culpable Homicide Case
In a significant development following the tragedy, police authorities have officially booked the truck driver for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This legal action came after comprehensive medical tests conclusively confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the precise moment of the catastrophic collision.
Superintendent of Police Ajaykumar Bansal provided crucial details about the investigation. "During our preliminary probe, it was definitively established that the driver had consumed liquor before getting behind the wheel. Accordingly, we have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder at the Jalna Taluka police station," he stated firmly.
Victims Identified, Most Hailed from Local Villages
The deceased victims have been formally identified, revealing heartbreaking personal stories behind the statistics:

- Laxmibai Santosh Madan (35)
- Meenabai Parmeshwar Adamane (45)

The accused driver has been identified as 25-year-old Prakash Rajwar, a container truck driver hailing from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh. He is currently in police custody as authorities await further forensic and medical reports that could potentially establish additional charges against him.

The fatal collision occurred on Wednesday evening near Kadwanchi village along the expressway. A speeding truck violently rammed into a pickup vehicle that was transporting laborers engaged in routine maintenance work along the expressway corridor.
The impact of the collision was so severe and devastating that seven individuals died instantly at the scene. Several other victims sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency medical treatment.
Community Grief and Compensation Demands

In response to this emotional standoff, the private contractor overseeing the labor work announced substantial financial assistance of Rs 15 lakh for the kin of each deceased victim.
